Staying beside the palace is a matter of choosing the right side of it. Marunouchi and Otemachi put you at the gates, Hibiya puts you at the park and Ginza, and a few rooms look straight over the moat. This page maps the areas, the walking times and the questions to ask.

Overview
The Imperial Palace sits in the middle of Chiyoda Ward, and the hotels near it cluster in three business-and-shopping districts rather than in a single resort strip. That is good news for a first visit, because a hotel within 15 minutes on foot of a palace gate saves a subway ride on the morning of the tour.1 It also puts you near Tokyo Station, which is where long-distance trains arrive.
We sell no hotels on this site; the offer here is a guided walk of the East Gardens. This page exists because people who search for a hotel near the Imperial Palace in Tokyo are usually planning the same trip. They want to know how close is close, which side of the moat to choose and whether a room can actually see the palace. The answers depend on a few facts that hotels themselves publish.
A caution applies to the whole subject. Hotel names and room views are the hotels' own claims, and they change with renovations and renamed room categories. We use only what each hotel's official page states, and we name hotels in prose to give you a starting point, not a ranking. Confirm the exact room and view with the property before you book anything.

Marunouchi is the district between Tokyo Station and the palace moat, and its hotels are the closest option for visitors arriving by train. The walk from the station's Marunouchi Central Exit to Kikyo-mon Gate is about 15 minutes, according to the Agency.2 Ote-mon Gate is also about 15 minutes from Tokyo Station on foot.1
Palace Hotel Tokyo is one example, with its address given as 1-1-1 Marunouchi, Chiyoda-ku.7 Its Park Suite faces southwest and offers 180-degree views of the Imperial Palace Gardens and the skyline from Marunouchi to Shinjuku.8 A suite like that is a special room, but it shows what the upper floors in this district can see.
The practical benefit of Marunouchi is flexibility. You can drop your bags at the hotel after the gardens, because baggage inspection at the gate is easier with a light bag, and the Agency itself suggests leaving luggage at a hotel.6
Walking time to a gate
Otemachi's hotels are the closest to the East Gardens' main entrance. Ote-mon Gate is a five-minute walk from Otemachi Station, which the Japan National Tourism Organization says is served by the Chiyoda, Tozai, Marunouchi, Hanzomon and Mita subway lines.3 A stay here makes the East Gardens a short morning stroll.
For the official tour the same station works well: Otemachi Station, Exit D2, is about 10 minutes on foot from Kikyo-mon Gate.12 That combination is hard to beat for a visitor who wants both the East Gardens and the inner-grounds tour on different days. Five lines also make cross-town trips to Shibuya, Shinjuku or Asakusa simple.
Palace Hotel Tokyo's Club Deluxe rooms on floors 18 through 23 look toward the Imperial Palace's Otemon Gate and Uchibori Dori avenue below, and the rooms measure 45 square meters with a king bed.5,13 The hotel's own room sheet gives a narrower floor range of 20 to 23,14 which is a reminder that floor lists differ between pages. Ask the hotel for the exact floors of the room you book.

Park and Ginza
Plan your staySouth of the palace, Hibiya is the third area, and its landmark is the Imperial Hotel. GO TOKYO describes the hotel, founded in 1890, as standing across the street from the large tree-filled Hibiya Park, just a short walk from the designer streets of Ginza and from the Imperial Palace.4 The hotel's own history page records its opening on November 3, 1890.18
Hibiya Station is a 10-minute walk from the gardens of Kokyo Gaien, according to JNTO.10 That is longer than the Otemachi walk to Ote-mon, and it is a different kind of walk: along the park and the moat toward the outer plaza and the double bridge. For travelers who plan to spend their evenings in Ginza, the trade of a slightly longer morning walk is easy to accept.
A hotel with a famous name does not mean a room with a palace view. The Imperial Hotel's name is a brand, not a description of what the windows show, so do not book it expecting a view of the palace. Treat it as an address near the park and the shopping streets, and look at the room category if the view matters to you.
A stay in four steps
Before booking
Marunouchi for the train, Otemachi for the gate, Hibiya for the park.1
At check-in
Palace Hotel Tokyo names the gate its Club Deluxe rooms face.5

The Agency recommends leaving baggage at a hotel.6
Walk
Otemachi to Ote-mon is about 5 minutes.3
After the walk
A guided walk lasts about 2 hours.
Views are sold by room category, and the palace is a low, green, walled place that tall towers dwarf. The rooms that see it are usually on upper floors facing the moat. Palace Hotel Tokyo's Club Deluxe rooms and Park Suite are the two examples we can state from the hotel's own pages.5,8
Look for words that name a gate, a moat or a garden in the room description, not general words such as city view. A room described as looking toward Otemon Gate tells you which side of the building it is on, and that is more useful than a floor number. If a booking page shows only a generic room, write to the hotel and ask which side of the building the room faces.
It also helps to match the view to your plans. If you will spend the morning in the gardens, a palace view at breakfast is a nice echo of the day. If you will arrive late and leave early, a quiet room and a short walk to the station matter more than a picture window. Decide which of the two you are paying for before comparing rates.

Located across the street from the large tree-filled Hibiya Park, it's just a short walk from the designer store-lined streets of Ginza, and the Imperial Palace.
The seasons shape a stay near the palace. June to mid-July can be wet and humid, with humidity often above 80%, and typhoon season begins in August.16,19 Summer heat can push the mercury above 35 degrees.17 In those months a hotel within a short walk of a gate is worth more than a cheaper room a subway ride away, because a short, shaded morning matters.
Early spring is still chilly, and the real cold only arrives in January, when the gardens close at 16:00.20,21,22 Cherry blossom week is the other pressure point: hotels near the palace fill early, so book well ahead if your dates match. The East Gardens are closed every Monday and Friday, so a stay that begins on a Sunday and ends on a Thursday gives the most open days.15
A short list of questions to ask a hotel: which gate is closest on foot, which floors face the moat, whether a late check-out suits a morning tour, and whether the front desk will hold luggage after check-out. That last one matters because the Agency recommends leaving baggage at a hotel or station locker before entering the gardens.6 A good answer to all four is a sign of a hotel that knows its neighbors.
